Getting a Visa

Most people coming to Australia to live need a visa. Whether you’re a student, skilled worker or business person, you’ll need to know about all the different criteria and entitlements and how they apply to you.

Working, studying or visiting family and friends? Make sure you apply for the right visa for your circumstances as the conditions may vary – having a visa to enter Australia may not automatically mean you can study or work.

To study in Australia

Student visas allow you to live in Australia for the duration of your course of study. You’ll need to prove that you’ve been accepted for a legitimate educational tuition before you can apply for your visa. Of course there are other requirements for eligibility to be taken into account, such as your health and good character, that you are able to meet the financial obligations of your tuition and living costs and that you have Overseas Student Health Cover. For working in Australia

To be employed as a temporary or permanent skilled worker, you need a valid visa with the appropriate authority to work. Australia is a great place to work, full of opportunities and offering a great lifestyle. However, as well as your rights you will need to understand your obligations. Find out more at border.gov.au
